There are many different titles of the Mick Jones mix of “Combat Rock” circulating, the two best I’ve heard are “Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg” and “Another Combat Rock” these have different track listings and running orders.
In comparison to the released album three songs are similar in length: Car Jamming, Should I Stay Or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah. The only shorter track is Death Is A Star with Atom Tan only slightly longer than the released version. Seven tracks are substantially longer: Sean Flynn, Red Angel Dragnet, Overpowered By Funk, Inoculated City, Ghetto Defendant, Know Your Rights and Straight To Hell.
This posted version is better sequenced than Rat Patrol with superior artwork but as for sound quality it’s not such a clear-cut decision. Six of these tracks will appear on the forthcoming Clash box set. Leaving nine to compare as the missing seven-minute version of Overpowered by Funk, two minutes longer than the official release is absent from Rat Patrol.
After normalizing the different track volumes to make a comparison easier, most have similar sound quality, others can be considered inferior to Rat Patrol such as Should I Stay Or Should I Go and Inoculated City but on the quieter tracks such as Sean Flynn and Death Is a Star, there is much less hiss, Car Jamming and Red Angel Dragnet are clearer here and not quite as murky sounding.
In Rat Patrol’s favour some tracks do have better bass and it does include the missing Cool Confusion.
